Go to a garage and get your new battery load tested before fitting it. The new battery should come fully charged if coming from a reputable shop. Return it if it fails the load test.

It is recommended to turn on parking lights when disconnecting old battery and leave them on whilst connecting the new battery. Apparantly the chance of causing damage to electronic components due to voltage spikes is somewhat reduced this way.
Avoid spilling any acid!
