It could be kicking out 18volts but that'd be useless if there's very few amps.
You have got the correct one haven't you (amps-wise) maybe the old one was 110 amps and this one is 70 which is why it's being overworked?
I know it's a horrible job but maybe you should replace it with the proper unit and stick this one on
A suggestion for getting the belt back on: get one of the kids to hold the belt near the alternator and spin the engine over
