Yeah, I'm sure anything PIC/atmel/arduino based would be fine, and any of them would probably be overkill as you say! I'm sure you can pick up a serial PIC programmer for less than a tenner these days.

I don't have the navigation system unfortunately, but if anyone attempts this then I'm sure it would make a good thread.
