Took it to Crawfords electrical in Frimley Green (recommended) who checked it over and confirmed the original was dead, but the new one is working!
Clearly this is my wiring problem. I think perhaps the original has a regulator on board which is why I cannot achieve the same result with the new one (which I presume does not).
Oh well! I think I will have to buy a new one for c. £150! and put it all down to experience.
UNLESS, someone has some other bright idea?
