Well Ive never done anything like that with a garage but did once order something from a computer shop and then tried to cancel when I found the same thing cheaper on the net.
I had to honour the contract I made with the shop and I would guess if your dealer really was stuck with the part you contracted to buy off him then he could make you pay.
It sounds as if he is trying to get a credit for you so that is very reasonable of him.
I guess the moral of the story is shop around before you make a contract with someone ..not after
Hope you get your credit though. If you dont get the credit you are entitled to the part no problem.
