OK, I went with the insurance route. I'm now awaiting the repairer's decision on the way forward. He says that the plastic has a "memory" and can be heated and then persuaded to return to the intended shape, then fill and paint. However, as you say this is very labour intensive and they will not decide until they know the price of the replacement.
Oh well, she bent one of my cars once so I can't complain.
