Also, should I really be driving it with a duff shock absorber?
If the car wouldn't pass an mot, then it isn't considered roadworthy.
A leaking shock absorber (the most common cause of failure) is normally fine up to a point (sometimes an advisory, or a fail depending on the extent of the problem). But I don't know if your shock absorber has lost all the fluid, in which case, I wouldn't drive it at all.
This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
