Just A Quick Q about that what does the earth Strap have to do with electrics going wrong? Sorry if that seems a dumb Q but i'm new to all this!!
the cars bodywork/engine is used as an earth. the negative terminal of the battery is just connected to this. therefor the battery, bodywork and engine must have sound electrical connections to each other. if you follow your negative battery lead it will connect to the bodywork, from the bodywork you will have a little strap that connects to the engine. not familiar with your car but on my clio the earth strap was more visible from underneath
if you have jump leads you can do a quick check of the earth connection to the engine. connect a jump lead to the negative battery terminal and the other end to a nice clean metal part of the engine.
