the cars bodywork/engine is used as an earth. the negative terminal of the battery is just connected to this. therefor the battery, bodywork and engine must have sound electrical connections to each other.
if you have jump leads you can do a quick check of the earth connection to the engine. connect a jump lead to the negative battery terminal and the other end to a nice clean metal part of the engine.
Thanx for that, that helps so much. I connected a new earth strap yesterday but didn't change anything, apart from that i'm gonna charge the battery and see what happens???
P.S My old earth starp has a plastic covering on it, however the new one i just fitted doesn't! Is that a cause for concern or is that just how they are nowadays??
