Why is my Battery Dead

I agree wth Madnoel. I would add that I have had similar problems, without warning, with two cars recently and a friend had the same with his 3 year old Focus,, his diesel suffered loss of all electrics in a rain storm at 3 am on the A50 when traveling at "70mph" Scary or what!!
Apparently modern electronics work in such a way that your charging light will extinguish whether the alternator is charging the battery or not!
In all these cases it was an alternater fault causing the problem.
But, best to check the simple things first, like drive belt tension and connections.
