I would totally agree Bearr. Renault have reduced their service intervals from 18,000 to 12,000. And I also feel that once a year would also be a good thing - cars can deteriorate through age not just distance travelled. A good example would be were the brake fluid or belts, etc should be changed when they reach a certain age.
Having said that I ain't convinced a Full-Dealer service history is all it's cracked up to be. I would rather see a service history from a dedicated knowledgeable independent who has a reputation to uphold not on some dealership were the numpty apprentice works to a timed schedule or bonus scheme.
For your mate abusing his engine when cold - well that's up to him but even the experts with money to burn don't force their engines when cold. Ask any race or rally driver.
