From a cold start keep an eye on the coolant temperature. It should obviously start at ambient and gently rise,if it starts at a temperature much higher or lower than ambient or sticks at one temperature and goes no higher, then you've found your problem.Usual running temperature can be anything from around 70 to 90,the fan will usually kick in above 90 to 100 approximately.
