I had a similar problem with a SAAB 9000 a few years ago. After the dealer changed the coils , turbo , ECU and various other parts (all under warranty, 3000 + labour) it turned out to be the HT leads. Total cost 65.

Although diesels are different (and the devils work ) it would be a good idea to check the glow plugs and leads. My guess would definitely be electrical.

About your heater issue, I don't know about VS's but most cars (AFAIK) have a valve which only puts hot water into the matrix when the engine is up to temperature. It could therefore be the temp sensor or the valve. Is your engine water temp gauge registering anything?

Good luck,

(p.s. this advice is worth what you paid for it, therefore no guarantees)
