From the sound of things, it would have been a multi-vehicle accident. They will have closed the motorway while they attended to the injured and cleared the carriageway. By the time you got to pass the stretch of road where it happened, there'd probably be very little left to see.

It seems to happen this way quite a lot. Often, there's no sign of an accident at all by the time they re-open the road.
