This absolutely is a fantastic post. I actually bought a new (2nd hand) heater matrix and swapped it today. Some of the info in this post was invaluable in doing that (getting the pipes off etc), and I just wish that i'd have had the facilities to flush through the matrix in situ (don't ask how many hose pipe connectors i've tried on my taps!).
I've got heating now, after 2 years of a cold car with misty windows!!
To those who are apprehensive about a heater matrix swap, if you have a car without air con, it's really not all that bad
I didn't even drain the cooling system. Almost nothing came out of the pipes going in to the bulkhead when I disconnected them, as the engine was stone cold.
If anyone wants my old heater matrix, which I've literally spent 30 minutes flushing brown crap out of, then PM me
