Good advice already given.

Give the scratch a damn good compound & polish beforehand to restore the existing paintwork and possibly reduce the area you need to paint.

I would suggest using a touch up paint (aerosols tend to make the repair area bigger), plus if the scratches are quite deep, its easier to precisely build-up the layers.

Add some thinners to the paint (its notoriously thick otherwise), and apply using an open-ended paperclip (or similar) along the length of the scratch.

Do this a few times until you are happy with the paint depth, then apply the lacquer (again, thinners & paperclip).

Its best to allow a day between coats at this time of year unless you have a means of forcing the paint dry (I.R. lamp/heatgun/hairdrier). Needless to say, only apply paint when the surface is dry.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
