I suspect that the temperature gauge works off of the same sensor as the ECU does.Sounds as though the ECU thinks that the engine is cold(when the gauge drops) and this will cause the symptoms you have.No management light is on because the ECU thinks it's doing the right thing with information it's getting.

I'd be tempted to have the ECU scanned,and from the live data you would be able to see what readings the sensor is giving.Any garage with a decent scanner could do this,you don't have to go to a main dealer.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
