Re: Is my car probably a write off?

If they do decide to write it off, you may have the option of keeping it as salvage (in exchange for a reduced insurance payout) and getting it repaired independently. I understand that this is an option with both Category C and Category D write-offs, though in the case of the Cat C, the fact that the car has been written off will be recorded on the V5 and will probably affect resale value.

But it's not unusual to be able to take this route and turn out with a fair amount of extra money in your pocket. So it might be worth doing, even if your car will be worth less after the repair. In the case of a Cat D, the car should hold its full value as long as it is properly repaired.
