Re: Is my car probably a write off?

In December 2002 (when I worked for Ford), I bought a small car to run in tandem with my cosworth. It was a Ford Ka Luxury. I got such an employee discount, that every optional extra box was ticked - yet I paid no more than the standard Lux model (9,500 to me vs 11,750 retail).

Less than one month later, a driver rear-ended the car whilst stationary at red traffic lights - the tailgate was burst, bumper demolished, and the boot floor had a huge distortion caused by the underslung spare wheel pivoting on its axis which nearly ruptured the floor.

It caused 4,500 pounds worth of damage.

The insurers valued the car based on its market value (i.e. retail & the options, which had been all declared), rather than what I paid for it, so it was repaired rather than written off.

The car was successfully repaired, and I put 88,500 miles on it in the following 3.5 years before the birth of my Son meant we outgrew it.

Now, I would believe that labour rates can only have increased from then, and the values of second-hand cars has diminished, so I would agree - it'll be written off.

Sorry to hear of someone else having a similar experience - it was an uninsured driver who hit me.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
