I wouldn't recommend leaving the bonnet up - dampness in the engine bay will only make it more difficult to start.
It might be the case where the bullet needs to be bitten and breakdown cover is needed.
This can be purchased online, and although I've only had a cursory look, the RAC (including homestart) is £77, the AA is £99 for the same coverage.
But I would have a look at all the comparison sites, and run through some quotes, join the one you find the best price/coverage.
It will cost more to get a mechanic out, and the benefit of buying the breakdown cover is that it will last for 12 month's rather than just this once.
This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
