Whilst there is no hard and fast laws against using a rope to tow a vehicle,many traffic cops would administer a fine or at least a warning on using one.It's a very contentious issue and a number of factors have to be taken into consideration,but I would really advise against using one.You also need to remember that a towed car is classed as an unbraked trailer,so the weight of the car being towed mustn't be more than the maximum weight that is capable of being towed by the vehicle doing the hard work(if that makes sense.......probably not.).

If you know someone with a towing-bar that you can borrow,then that is the way to go.
