I think you've got the right idea,an older car with a good history and that is straight is a much better bet than a newer one with a patchy history.These cars primarily have a hard life and signs that it's been looked after will minimise any potential future problems.An HPI check on any prospective purchase is a must,there are a lot of these that have been thrown through hedges etc,making sure that a car is all it makes out to be is important.
I'd have a test drive in a few different ones,have a look at as many as possible and don't rush into any purchase.Good luck and let us know how you get on.
