In an experiment to figure out why my car was returning 34mpg, I decided to run the tank down to what I thought was vapour.

I filled it up until pump clicked, then a bit more... then a bit more until it so nearly got onto the forecourt.

That was 54L. A few alarm bells started ringing.

I then ran the car down to back where it was (what I thought was vapour) and returned 540 miles.

The trip computer told me I had consumed 15.8 gallons. Which I believe is nearly 72L.

If you work it out the MPG is correct, around 34mpg.

However, if you actually work out what 54L is, which converts to 11.8Gall on 540 miles you get 45.49mpg.

Which is acceptable for what it was used for!

Anyone explain this? I have a few obvious theories.

Said this before (several times and will say it again ) ... Renault onboard computers, esp the fuel consumption ones were designed and programmed by Hans Christen Anderson, and do little else but tell fairy stories and only give an indication of whats going on ... work it out manually if your worried ... 4.546 ltr's is 1 imperial gallon.

Hope it helps

Why is it the older I get .... the better I think I was ?
