Yep, this is an old thread but it showed up in a a search for something totally different.
If the rx4 fan site is still operational and you've still got the Rx4 have a look there. Those guys have wiring diagrams for installing the switch yourself.
The other option for the short term is to just pop the ABS fuse when you are going to be driving in the soft stuff.
BTW, the road profile/tread pattern is better for the sand than dedicated off-road tyres unless they are sand type tread because a more aggressive tread will dig you a hole where as road tyres will keep you above the sand.
Did you let any air out before venturing onto the sand? Down to 22psi for a start(with gauge) I wouldn't go too much lower with a road tyre.
