Not necessarily.

If it had a clogged air filter - performance would be flat, economy would suffer, and no fault light would display.

(as an example)

EGR valve again wouldn't trigger any warning lights.

Personally speaking, if you hate the car, no amount of persuading will make owning it an enjoyable experience, but I'm not sure if you have a car with a genuine 'problem' or if its more the case that owning it, is the 'problem'.

I would suspect the latter reason is closest to the mark.
