Are you aware that you have to push the gear selector over to the left to select manual mode then push up to change up the gears and pull back to change down. I would just drive it in automatic mode using gentle acceleration or firmer acceleration when needed and the gearbox will adapt to your own style of driving. You can use manual mode when the gearbox would be likely to select the wrong gear (usually a too high a gear) for the type of road such as going down a steep hill or going round a tight bend so you can manually hold a lower gear so the car does not run away and you have more control.
