Removing "Stuck On" & Glued Number Plates

I hope you will be able to help me.
One of our vehicles has number plates stuck on instead of screws. The front is "stuck on" but the rear kept coming loose, so glue was squirted behind a few years ago to prevent it falling off.
Now this plate is going onto retention we will be putting on the new registration mark, so I want to get the old ones off without breaking them.
I would appreciate any advice in getting the plates off. The front I would imagine would be easier as it isn't glued, but as the rear plate is stuck on with glue, I would like to know if it is possible to get this off without breaking it.
