Re: Renault Scenic - Engines - Cam Belt Change

Well my 2000 / 2.0L 16V Scenic Sport decide to throw its auxiliary belt at the end of last year and it wrapped itself around the crankshaft, damaging the cam belt at the same time

Luckily it was as I started the car so on strip down it had only bent some valves

Had a mechanic mate do the work (he bought all the specialist tools for himself ready to do others) and total cost including getting the head checked / new valves / guides fitted (they supplied all the gaskets bolts etc as well) came to just over £500 so not too bad (although I now owe him some welding work)
Only problem was the time it took due to the weather – doh!

Advice he was given from a mate who is a Renault mechanic

1. Don’t do the job as its a pig to take the head off etc (too late as he had already done it)
2. The alternator pulley goes sharp on the serrations overtime and damages the belt
3. Turn the engine 4-5 times to ensure the timing is in the correct place
4. Be careful with the locking pin as there is a step just near the hole and can get misaligned – it needs 2 people to do this, one to turn the engine back and forth with a TDC stick down the plug hole and a mate ‘feeling’ for the locating hole
5. Don’t use the locking pin nor cam alignment tool as a lever when tightening the crank or cam bolts – they will bend / break (sump off to get broken locking pin!!!!)

Car all running okay now so it can be sorted – unfortunately you just need to find a good ‘low cost’ mechanic!
