Renault Scenic II brakes

I am going to be putting my car into an independent for an oil change at 27,000 miles (don't like the idea of going 18K between changes).

Should I be thinking of getting him to change the brake pads as well (renault parts of course)? How long should they last? As with many other Scenic owners I get a lot of squeaking from mine and the pedal is very soft but think it always has been (pedal travels quite far before brakes bite).

However I am not sure if above symptoms are just characteristics of the Scenic in general or do they suggest that pads need changed?

How much life should I get out of a set of pads?
