I'd say that there are three main factors:
1) The extra cost of the 5 door over the 3 door when new (as I recall, it's a good 500 quid.)
2) The fact that the 3 door generally looks better than the 5 door. This was certainly the case with the Clio II.
3) As already mentioned: The people who are likely to want back doors are also more likely to buy bigger cars. We probably only went for a 5 door Clio on account of already having a 3 door, and the lack of back doors being the only thing that we didn't like.
Certainly, the 5 door Clio II's are like rocking horse muck. We found ours by pure fluke, while taking the previous one in for a service. This one had just been traded in that day. We and our salesman actually gazumped another salesman and customer who'd had first dibs on the next one that came in. I suppose that's the luck of the draw.
We actually wanted a 5 door dCi, but I suspect you're talking lottery odds there. We ended up with another 1.2 16v.
