That's kind of incidental. Cars that have the auto locking feature also have the three button card, but having a three button card won't give you auto locking on a car that was never designed for it.
Besides the door sensors (a little dark plastic window behind each handle) you also need a special receiver module with antennae in the roof. As far as I'm aware, none of these were ever fitted to any of the UK spec Phase 1 Laguna II's.
The handsfree card itself is designed to transmit via radio over a short range, whereas the standard card just functions as a close-proximity (probably a few mm at best) transponder chip. The phase 2 cards also no longer have the hole at the top to allow the card to be locked into the reader.
