I disagree, diesels are much better around town than petrols due to the torque all coming under 4000rpm, so you get the power in a usable part of the rev range, instead of half of it being higher up in the rev range where you will probably never use it.
Also diesels tend to warm up quicker than petrols which is good if you do a lot of short journeys.
Diesels do need to be given a good run on the motorway evey now and then though.
To be honest it's all about personal preference really, which you engine you find nicer to drive. The diesel will return better mpg and i would think, be easier to drive. I haven't driven the 1.4 petrol but i would think it may be slightly under powered for a kangoo and thus hard work to drive.
