They can be a bit of a pain depending on engine type,some you have to drop the offside front lower joint out of the hub carrier to be able to push the hub/driveshaft out of the way to get enough room to drop the alternator out.If your on you own then it's probably just as easy to take the shaft right out,but if you have an assistant you can get them to lever the wishbone down and move the hub fowards or backwards to get enough clearance as you get underneath and manouvere the alternator.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
