The simplest way around that (and I'm sure you'd have the presence of mind to think of this yourself), would be to plead ignorance, say you bought the car like that, and have the previous mots as proof that its been roadworthy - not ethical, but if some buffoon drives into your car (not even having seen their own light reflected off the number plate) - why should you be penalised?
As I've said before, people buying secondhand cars can only be expected to declare modifications which are obvious, and don't require stripping the car down to its components - mondeo rear lights on the rear of a mondeo wouldn't strike me as unusual at all...
