Braking harshly does not affect your fuel consumption!
It is what you do before braking harshly that wastes fuel and also wears other components of your car and can be dangerous.
Why keep your foot down after seeing an obstruction well ahead where you know you will have to stop and break harshly in the last few metres? If you take your foot off and just let the engine slow you down for the length of road this takes you will not be using any fuel. Do this every time and your consuption of fuel will drop dramaticaly!
