How To Treat a Garage to Avoid Getting Conned?

If you're someone who spends quite a lot of time on this Renault Forum so you already know a fair bit regarding your car and its possible problems, how do you ensure that a garage doesn't try and tell you that the problem is more major than it is, to get more money out of you, but at the same time not appear to be an annoying know-all?

For example, I've had at least 5 solid confirmations from various Renault sources that my cambelt doesn't need changing til 120,000 miles, so what if the garage insists I do need it changing "because your car's over 5 years old" or some other contradictory reason?

When I know a lot but at the same time am useless at hands-on mechanics, plus am skint, I just want to make sure I can find that balance and protect my pockets but at the same time not cheese a new garage off, the first time I go there?
