Angry Re: Clutch or Not???

I had this problem on same model. It was the slave cylinder piston which is hydraulically operated and directly sits in front of the clutch housing. It has a plastic ball joint (plastic ....would you believe...only Renault would be that shortsighted) that seats into a metal rocker arm which operates the clutch. It is prone to splitting ind slowly moves down its shaft, gradually shortening the clutch engagement distance, until it finally breaks - then you are screwed as, when you finally operate the clutch pedal, the action pushes the piston out of the clutch cylinder. Costs 280 to buy (absolute rip-off for pathetic bits of plastic ) and another 300 for garage to fix (they have to strip out the glove box and facia and steering). Did it ourselves ....took over a days work. Replaced the piston by one we had made out of phosphor bronze but renault part will work. Just didn't trust them any more. For the record, Renault claim this is a symptom of a clutch on its way out - but there is nothing to warn you. They recommennd replacing the cyl assembly when replacing the clutch. Of course, Espace owners are cash cows with unlimited money........!
