Just an update to let you know the outcome.
Lagdti, thanks for the advice. I got the battery checked out and sure enough it was no good under load. I swapped it for a new one, cleaned up all the lead connections, put the starter motor back in and it started first time.
With hindsight it seems obvious now that it couldn't have been the starter. The only strange thing is that it showed the same symptons when I tried to jump start it. Perhaps I didn't have a good earth when I connected!
Anyway, I've learnt how to get the starter out of a 5. Not difficult, just very fiddly as there is no room to get any sockets or spanners in where you can give them a good turn.
So, he's back on the road now. Which reminds me I must chase him up for the money for the new battery i got him...
Many thanks to you all. I appreciate the help.
