As benny says, upgrade the speakers first.
The weakest link in most standard setups is the speakers.
Manufacturers penny pinch by fitting the cheapest speakers they can find. Even buying cheap aftermarket speakers should imrove things.
The standard headunit isn't actually that bad. It could be improved but on the whole is pretty good.
We have the "cabbasse auditorium" std unit in ours with the cabasse speakers. The sound quality is good enough not to warrant spending extra on upgrading it. Bass could be a little deeper but overall sound for a Manufacturer std fit is above average.
