but sometimes it shoots up to the top of the gauge and stays there especially when idling in traffic then the fan cuts in and it eventually goes back to normal its doing my head in any thoughts?
billymorgs, did you sort this out? I'd try replacing the temperature sensor first, they're not usually very expensive, and you need to establish if it's telling you lies. They can be intermittent - I had one once which always read the same very high temperature whatever once the engine was warm - and I didn't realise until I'd been right through the cooling system changing everything else!
