Problem sorted yesterday. Apparently the alarm system did not recognise the ECU , so the immobiliser would not switch off. Friend of a friend who used to be a Renault tech came along and manually released the immobiliser using a 'universal' code number, but he wouldn't tell me what it was.
Took the car to local Renault dealer who reprogrammed the alarm to the ECU . Only charged me 1/2 an hour labour (£37 inc vat). Thought that was pretty fair. They also carried out the outstanding recall repair without being prompted, which I thought was good service.
