Re: Advice for replacing family car
What about the Citroen Xsara Picasso?
Not everyones cup of tea looks wise but have been around a few years and are pretty reliable. Citroen diesels are pretty much bullet proof.
With Citroens discount deals when new, you should be able to get a decent relatively new one for 6K. They were selling off brand new unregistered 10 plate models for £10k a few months ago!
2.0hdi is a good cruiser, quite refined & quiet and will easily do 50mpg - more on a run.
1.6hdi quicker but noisier and not really any more economical.
Petrol are ok but not that cheap to run.
Buying secondhand the extra cost of buying a diesel is less and also sounds like your driving style is well suited to the 2.0hdi.
The "Desire" - model is probably best all round for value - nicely specced with air con,cd, electric windows, etc.
For more comfort & toys the exclusive is the one to have.
Avoid base LX models - seat material is hideous & no air con and tape deck not cd player. I know you say you are not bothered about air con but in a car that size with all that glass it is ESSENTIAL, not only to keep cool in summer but to keep them from misting up in winter.
Also seats just as easy to remove and ALL 3 rear seats are full size, unlike scenics where the middle one is narrower. Seats stay in place when folded as well and dont need the elastic bungee cord like the Scenic. Still get the high up mpv style view out as well.
Don't get me wrong - the Xsara Picasso is built to a price, with a few cost cutting measures ( bits of painted metal on show inside, cheap carpet) - but for overall value for money, there are few mini mpvs to rival it.
At the time we chose the Picasso over a Scenic, mostly as the Picasso was several £K cheaper for similar spec.
The C4 Picasso is light years better than the Xsara Picasso but still too new for your budget of £6k.
