I was about about to suggest the Picasso too ST. My wife has one and loves it too bits (you wouldnt think so by the state of the inside though ! )

She has a 2001 1.8 16v SX petrol engined Picasso. The engine has a bit of guts about (well when I'm driving it , and on a medium / longish runs return mid 40's mpg (according to the on board computer). Around town it manages about 32mpg ish.

Like ST says, there not the most prettiest things in the world, but are very versatile. The facelift versions from 53 plate onwards are a bit better to look at I think, they have slighty different bumpers, chrome bits and are a bit changed inside.
