thanks for the suggestions, all very helpful, particularly when it comes to engine choice. The Scenic 1.9 dti is just about enough and I can see that a 2.0 diesel would give a little bit more. Got very used to 50mpg so dropping to a petrol mpg will be a shock ;-)

Take your point about A/C, managed to do without for so long I forget how nice a cool car can be, as well as the de-misting properties.

I have thought about the Citroen before but didn't quite like it as much as the Scenic. Seen a few reviews about seats not being very comfy which might be a pain as family visits can be lengthy affairs.

My kids and their friends love the Scenic as it is so comfy, makes motorway travel a lot easier.

How about Vauxhall Zafira? or even Ford C-Max? They've had quite good reviews?
