I think a lot of it comes down to the bottom line.

Yes, these cars are more expensive to buy (if they are being bought, and not leased), but the general running costs will be broadly similar (Police do their own servicing, so no main dealer rates), and fuel costs again won't differ hugely.

Where the difference will be most apparent is the residual value of a prestige brand, vs a volume brand - this is what will offset the higher purchase price, and will make the car cheaper to lease, as its an asset which hasn't depreciated so highly.

An example of this is nearly new Insignias are being offered with delivery miles for almost half the list price - what would one 2 years old & > 100,000 miles be worth (next to nowt).
