you're right to be anxious about the belts. mine only had 32,000 miles on it when i changed it last year, BUT it is a 9 year old car, so it was overdue, really.
kits should'nt cost that much surely, although mines a 1.2, i still only paid £42 delivered for a continental/dayco kit from a parts distributor on
. i was quoted £140 for one supplied and fitted from a local garage, but me & my dad done it ourselves in an hour or so.

"every 36,000 miles, renew the timing belt*
*note: although the normal interval for timing belt renewal is 72,000 miles, it is strongly recommended that the interval is halved to 36,000 miles on vehicles which are subjected to intensive use i.e mainly short journeys, stop-start driving".
