The steel used in these cars is just to soft. I think my old Volvo 440 would of done a better job, despite not having side airbags!
The steel is much, much stronger. I very much doubt your 440 would have been better off.
Infact, I think 5th gear did one of their crashes with a Modus hitting an old Volvo with the implication that the greater strength of today's stronger vehicles poses an additional danger to older vehicles they may crash in to.
