More 1.9s fail than 2.2s because more were sold. A proportion of those failures are due to turbo abuse, no cool-down or warm-up. The original oil change schedule was wildly optimistic in this context. Ultimately a turbo is a consumable, so lasting beyond 100k miles is a bonus. The problem is if instead of dying slowly and giving you a chance to get to the garage or even ask a second opinion, it blows up and writes off the entire engine at the roadside.

BMW 320 and 330d had a similar engine writeoff scenario regarding their swirl flaps dislodging and destroying the head and cylinders. But no one on here has been able to point the finger at a specific fault on the 1.9, that could have caused the frequent runaway problem. The fact the 1.9 and 2.2 are so different would suggest the fact both have fallen foul of runaway is a maintenance issue more than a specific failing.

The extended yellow OTS would seem to have gone some way to redress the weakness of the original 18k oil service schedule on these engines, and by all accounts the 2.0 doesn't suffer from the problem at all, no do engines post 2004
