Re: Garage charges

I would agree wholeheartedly on garages or mechanics not relying on anothers diagnosis.

Over many years of experience I have been I have nearly been caught out.

I used to work for a small garage that specialised in reconditioning engines on older classic style cars. I came across one memorable job.

A guy brought in an MGB which was burning oil at such a rate it filled the street with smoke. He had been informed by 3 previous mechanics that he needed either a new engine or have it reconditioned. On starting the engine I wasn't convinced it was a cylinder wear problem and the compression tests looked too good. After an hour or so I discovered the crankcase PCV valve was faulty and after fitting a new diaphram costing 1-75 plus two hours labour all was well.

So a second diagnosis can on some occasions actually save the customer money.
