We actually abandoned the presure washer as a leak finder a couple of years ago, not a misguided a guess at all, sometimes wonder how we all got on before the "jetwash" came to be a workshop tool, oh yes the good old hose pipe.
As you say rightly tested on cars at a far higher presure, but I do belive these being new cars not older used cars with worn seals, we abandend this due to us finding and repairing leaks giving car back to customer and then gettting it back in a weeks time as it still leaks, all we had done was find a weak spot/worn spot what ever you want to call it, but not the actual leak, you will also find the "new" way of doing things with a jet was does not include asking the customer where and how this car is parked when it leaks as we are or rather where beliving the all powerful jet wash will find the leak when all you have to do is posititon the car via a jack that matches its parked postion when leaking.
we also found that technicians who hate water leaks, don't know any that like them as they sap bonus, stand way to close to the vehicle to get the quick fix power was to find it, majority of the time we found it finds leaks, but not the ones the customer is complaining about, as we find when they bring it back and we can't really charge to look for a leak we have already "found" customer does not like it.
Cars with good seals will hold out water from a jet wash, cars with warn seals wont or cars with touch seals, you can stand a fair distance away and wash but then you lose all the "power" of the jet wash so what is the point of it then.
My CC can be washed with a hose fine no water ingress, yet put a jet wash on it and it leaks like a sieve around the window tops and quater lites, unless you angle the jet wash down, stand with it hip height and it pours in, so to run the jet wash at a distance not to leak you may as well not bother firing it up and just hose pipe it.
We also found the meg 1,s with the sunroofs use to pour water in from the jet wash, the sunroof was always a problems with them as rain water would be pushed up the sun roof seam by the wind, they fixed it (ho ho) by raising the front lip of the sunroof behind the roof aerial, which worked on the new cars but after two years service back they came with the old saying "my sunroof leaks" as a Renault dealer we did loads of them and at one stage we actually got an internal memo from Renault tell us not to use a jet wash to wash or find leaks on the Reanult as warranty would not pay for the work.
You want to try and wash an EOS with a jet wash, we have a company policy now of HOSE PIPE ONLY WASH on EOS for the valters as a service wash with the jetwash will get the customer back in a few days with a steamed up car and wet carpets, us wasting time looking for a leak that was caused by the valeters and the customer refusing to pay for the testing as the car was alright until we serviced it which in turn knocks us down on our HSO score for complaints.
So after 30 years in the motor trade not really misguided thinking more along the lines of right tool for the job, you don't need a sledge hammer to crack a nut, this is why service in a lot of garages is not so good anymore that includes ours as the technicians have the train of thought get it in and out as quick as possible, there does not seem to be room in this fast fix world anymore for our older pride in job "mechanics" just fast fix jonnie.
